The Java collection
Each region of Indonesia has their own unique approach to weaving, which can be identified through the characteristics of the fabric. Sarong weaving in Java focuses on the importance of structure and patterns, which represent the sacred heritage held within the village. These hand woven techniques have been passed through generations of weavers, traditionally mother to daughter, and create a strong sense of community in every creation.
The Ikat Style
Ikat means "to bind" and refers to a tie-and-dye process Indonesian weavers embrace. One of the oldest forms of textile decoration, in the Ikat style, threads are arranged on a tying frame, then bound using palm leaf fiber.
Hand-Spun Rayon
Each Java Ikat sarong is carefully thought out prior to the weaving process. Once the desired spools of thread have been chosen, the entire piece of artwork can take two weeks to two months to hand weave, depending on its complexity.
Natural Island Dyes
Threads are hand dyed and dried six to ten times in order to produce the desired shade of color. Certain colors, such as light blue, are exposed to direct sunlight halfway through the process in order to transform the dark indigo dye into the desired shade.
